17N (1971AJ02)

(See Energy Level Diagrams for 17N)

GENERAL: See also Table 17.1 [Table of Energy Levels] (in PDF or PS).

Theory and reviews: (1961BA1C, 1962GO1B, 1966MA12, 1970HI15).

Experimental papers: (1962VO01, 1965CI01, 1966PO08, 1967AU1B, 1967CA1J, 1968AR1F, 1968DO20, 1969AR13).

1. (a) 17N(β-)17O* → 16O + n Qm = 4.536
(b) 17N(β-)17O Qm = 8.679

The half-life of 17N is 4.14 ± 0.04 sec (1948KN24), 4.20 ± 0.08 sec (1961HI01), 4.16 ± 0.01 sec (1965DO13), 4.17 ± 0.02 sec (1970ME31): the mean of these values is 4.16 ± 0.01 sec. See also (1959AJ76).

The decay is primarily [≈ 95% (1964SI06)] to neutron unstable states of 17O, principally 17O*(4.55, 5.38, 5.94) [Jπ = 3/2-, 3/2- and 1/2-, respectively] (1961PE28, 1963GI04). The ratio of the intensities of these delayed neutrons from 17O*(5.38) and 17O*(4.55) is 1.6 (1961PE28). There are also weak branches to 17O*(0, 0.87, 3.06): see Table 17.2 (in PDF or PS) (1964SI06). The character of the decay indicates Jπ = 1/2- for 17N(0). See also (1965MA16, 1970BE21, 1970HI15).

2. 11B(7Li, p)17N Qm = 8.415
Q0 = 8.38 ± 0.06 (1959LI47).

Proton groups have been observed to many states in 17N: see Table 17.3 (in PDF or PS) (1959LI47, 1965HA05, 1966MC05). See also (1963MO1B). Angular distributions have been measured at E(7Li) = 5 MeV to most of the states with Ex < 6.5 MeV (1966MC05).

Observed γ-transitions are displayed in Tables 17.3 (in PDF or PS) and 17.4 (in PDF or PS) (1965HA05, 1969TH01). The mean lifetimes of 17N*(1.37, 1.91, 3.13, 3.21) are, respectively, < 0.2, > 0.5, < 0.3 and > 0.3 psec, suggesting J ≤ 3/2 for 17N*(1.37) and J ≥ 5/2 for 17N*(1.91) (1969TH01). See also (1965CA05, 1967CA1D).

3. 14C(α, p)17N Qm = -9.715

See (1961PE28).

4. 15N(t, p)17N Qm = -0.110

See (1963GI04, 1964SI06).

5. 17O(n, p)17N Qm = -7.896

See 18O in (1972AJ02).

6. 18O(γ, p)17N Qm = -15.942

See 18O in (1972AJ02).

7. 18O(n, d)17N Qm = -13.718

See 19O in (1972AJ02).

8. 18O(d, 3He)17N Qm = -10.449

Not reported.

9. 18O(t, α)17N Qm = 3.872
Q0 = 3.872 ± 0.015 (1960JA13).

Alpha-particle groups corresponding to 17N states with Ex < 5.9 MeV are displayed in Table 17.3 (in PDF or PS) (1960JA13, A.D.W. Jones, private communication). Angular distributions to most of these have been measured at Et = 12.9 MeV (1968JO1G, 1969JO1L): the spectroscopic strength of the transition to 17N*(5.52) is equal to that of the ground state: it is probably the p3/2 hole state.

10. 19F(n, 3He)17N Qm = -16.217

Not reported.
